A prodrug of acyclovir; inhibits HSV-I replication (IC50 = 0.84 µM); rapidly converted to acyclovir in vivo; active against varicella-zoster and Epstein-Barr viruses in vitro (IC50s = 1.3-20.6 and 0.3-25 µM, respectively)
